They can then walk through different terrains, such as mountains, forests and caves. For a bird's eye view, players can fly up in the air.

With the Oculus Rift now available gamers can experience virtual reality.

Joshua Blair, the museum's digital learning coordinator, explained that the map that was the first in the Great Fire1666 series allowed us to make visitors feel part of London's history and its times in 1666. We were able to reconstruct the narrow streets and iconic landmarks such St Paul's Cathedral or London Bridge to create the setting for the fire.

He added: 'This new map is where the Great Fire story really unfolds and we hope that players will be enthralled by the most important event in London's history in a fun and enjoyable way.'

According to its creators, the mini-games draw in historical figures like King Charles II, Thomas Farriner - whose bakery started the blaze - and also the famous diarist Samuel Pepys, who documented the blaze.

The game forms part of the museum's Great fire 1666 exhibition which will run until April 2017.

Players will be available to download the new maps for PC and Mac from 2 September.
